Wading into a flooded basement with the power on

Water touching an energized outlet, a submerged appliance, or a wet panel turns the whole flooded area into a shock hazard. People go in to save belongings and do not come back out.

Better approach: Power off first, always. If you cannot shut the main without standing in water, stay out and call the utility. No possession in that basement is worth your life.

Resetting breakers or running wet appliances

Anything that was submerged, from the furnace to a power strip to the panel itself, can be internally damaged and dangerous even after it looks dry.

Better approach: Have a licensed electrician inspect the panel and any flooded circuits before you re-energize them. Water-damaged appliances get inspected or replaced, not just plugged back in and hoped over.

Running the generator in the garage or by a window

Carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless, and it kills within minutes at high concentration. An open garage door or a nearby window does not make it safe. Generator CO deaths spike after every major storm.

Better approach: Outdoors only, 20 feet or more from the house, exhaust aimed away from doors, windows, and vents. Put a battery CO alarm near sleeping areas and test it before the storm, not after.

Backfeeding the house through a wall outlet

Plugging a generator into an outlet to power the house sends current back down the utility line. It can electrocute a lineworker and destroy your equipment when grid power returns.

Better approach: Use a transfer switch installed by an electrician, or run appliances directly from the generator with heavy-duty outdoor extension cords. Never backfeed through an outlet, no exceptions.
