The national association for amateur radio. Local clubs in every state offer free or low-cost licensing classes and exams.

What to expect

ARRL is the national body for amateur (ham) radio in the US. Their network of 3,000+ local clubs offers Technician, General, and Extra class license preparation courses, most free or under $20. Clubs also run weekly nets, field days, and emergency communications drills. Ham radio is the backbone of emergency communications when all other systems fail.
